WINE

The University of Padua have found that the popularity of Prosecco is resulting in increased planting of vines in the Veneto region of Italy. This is causing soil loss from the hillsides due to erosion from heavy rain. The researchers estimate that some 400,000 tonnes of soil are lost each year. This apparently represents some 4.4Kg for each bottle of Prosecco produced.

WINE - THE NUMBERS

Wine ranges from 5% to 15% proof.

The most common European red, white, rose or fizzy wines are 12% proof. Four days intake of 3.5 units represents two glasses of 1.45.ml per day. In the USA the glass size goes down to 2 x 1.16 ml to give the same units as their wine is usually 15% proof.

A small [50ml] glass of Port [at 20%] after a meal adds a further unit to the consumption.
