PRIVATE JETS
In a small article on page 22 of the Guardian newspaper Phoebe Wilson records some very important information about global warming. She tells us that ‘we each need to reduce our CO2 emissions to 2.3 tonnes each year by 2030’ and that this is about a half of today’s UK average. She also tells us that ‘the poorest 50% of the world population will be releasing just one tonne of CO2 annually’ but ‘the richest 1% will be responsible for 70 tonnes each person per year by 2030, if current consumption levels continue’
She notes that many of the high profile delegates at the recent Cop 26 Conference arrived by private jet. According to transportenvironment.org private jet emissions have soared in recent years with a 31% increase between 2005 and 2019. In that year, one tenth of all flights departing from France were with private jets, half of which travelled less than 500Km. Their report also finds that private jets are 5 to 14 times more polluting than commercial planes [per passenger] and 50 times more polluting than trains. They say that a single jet can, in just one hour, emit two tonnes of CO2.
Phoebe Wilson also points out that Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson and Elon Musk each flew to the edge of space recently in their individual spacecrafts. She tells us that ‘The emissions from a single 11 minute space flight amount to at least 75 tonnes of CO2.’
