NAPPIES

Around 755,000 babies are born annually in the UK, each one could use between 1800 to 2000 nappies before they are dry. This represents a round figure of 1.500,000,000 nappies. A majority of these are disposable and will remain in landfill for hundreds of years before they decomposes.

However washable Terry Towelling [which we used many years ago when our kids were young]  has been estimated to create 570 Kgs of carbon emissions when we take into account water, soap and energy. This compares unfavourably with disposables that account for some 550 Kg.

The growing awareness of the environment has accelerated a move to more expensive reusable nappies. These have a washable outer with a biodegradable  bamboo liner which catches the solid and liquid waste.  When dirty the liner can be rinsed in the toilet before being put in the bin and sent to landfill where it will decompose relatively quickly.
