Whilst tourists contribute to to the local economy they are a major eco concern. Air travel is increasing with some 200 million holiday flights scheduled from UK airports this summer. This is increasing EU green house gas emissions which grew by 87% between 1992 and 2006.

Also 40% of the marine litter in the Mediterranean sea each year is attributed to summer visitors. The rapid rise in July & August contributes to the estimated 150m tonnes of plastic in the ocean. Visitors are being asked to “cut down on their use of single use plastics that they throw away, drink tap water where possible, refuse plastic straws and skip the purchase of plastic pool toys.” “We are all part of the solution not the problem” says Tanya Steele CEO of WWF UK .
