DIGGING
Digging the garden has long been thought to aerate the soil, reduce weeds and boost fertility. However, James Wong the gardener has written that scientific studies suggests that this may not be the case. It destroys the crumbly structure created by worms, weeds are spread and beneficial microbes can be killed. He claims that covering the beds with 10 cm of organic mulch is much more effective. It breaks down slowly and is drawn into the soil by the worms to aerate the structure. This boosts their numbers and allows beneficial organisms to thrive.
So maybe it is time to stop digging, perhaps you could paint your fork and spade a bright colour and turn them into striking modern sculptures to enhance your new ‘dig free’ garden.
