THINGS DISCARDED / CORRUGATED CARD
Three sheets of thin paper are formed into an inexpensive lightweight board. This looks deceptively simple but is structurally quite sophisticated. The stiff skins are separated by a corrugated core which turns these flimsy components into a robust sheet.
The material can be easily shaped and creased for folding. Most is used in packaging but it is also a display material. Designers have created ‘avant-guarde’ furniture from it and the homeless often use large packs as an insulated construction material. To meet these varying needs some 90 million tonnes of corrugated card are manufactured each year.
