CHAIN SAW According to a series of recent Simon Reeve documentaries the Russian boreal [coniferous] forest is the largest on earth and bigger than the Amazon. In fact, he says, it contains a 1/4 of all the trees on globe and could be called the ‘lungs of the world’. It is therefore worrying to be told that some 8,000 square miles of this forest are cleared every year. That is an area the same size as Wales and is comparable with similar losses in Brazil. If that was not enough, he recalls that about a 1/3 of this logging is illegal and is perhaps the largest hidden deforestation in the world.
