BANANAS
WHO DO WE BELIEVE ?
Bananas have become a weapon in the battle between UK food stores. Cut price supermarket Aldi strives to make sure that it has the cheapest bananas on the market. It has 10,000 stores in 20 countries, giving it a strong bargaining position when negotiating prices. The banana growers and exporters are facing higher costs. ‘Fertilizers, cardboard and plastics have increased by between 30% and 45% in the last year; their freight charges have also gone up by some 60%’ says Zoe Green in her article for the Guardian. She also reports the growers’ claim that ‘the price paid for their fruit has not risen for more than two decades.’
However, Aldi says it is a member of the World Banana Forum and part of a working group looking at the cost of sustainable production. They claim ‘We are working hard towards ensuring everyone in our supply chain is paid a fair price.’
