GAMBLING

AGAINST THE ODDS

A New Year report in the Guardian by Rupert Neate and Jasper Jolly tells us that Denise Coates, the boss of Bet365, received pay of£260m for the year ending March 2022. This was la drop of 35m on the year before and less than the £471m she collected in 2020.

Rob Davies another Guardian journalist tells of  the other end of the gambling chain. He recounts stories of ‘men wetting or even soiling themselves because they are convinced that leaving the machine would deprive them of a win’. In his article he tells of one gambler, before the £2.00 per bet limit was imposed, losing £13,700 in just seven hours.

A recent BBC Panorama programme indicated that on-line gambling creates similar problems. Easy access to betting sites can have catastrophic effects on addicts with one woman saying she ‘lost £129,000 in a few months before going on to gamble away her inheritance - a total loss of £633,000‘. Throughout this period she was continually targeted by the company who credited her account with significant gifts of money to entice her to continue betting.

The Senet Group’s ‘When the Fun Stops, Stop’ campaign attempts to promote responsible gambling. It, however, relies on high levels of individual self control that can be difficult, or even impossible, for many gamblers.
