THINGS OVERLOOKED / DRINKING WATER

[THIS IS NOT AN OAK TREE !]

Clear, crisp, clean and, when chilled, there is perhaps no drink as ‘beautiful’ or refreshing. According to World Health Organisation reports 89% of the world population now has access to a clean supply. However, water bourn diseases like diarrhoea kills some 2,000 children under 5 each day, that is one death every 43 seconds.

Since the 1200‘s there have been many recorded attempts at filtering systems. The first successful process was developed by John Gibb a Paisley Tanner in 1804. Public water treatment was created by James Simpson when working for the Chelsea Waterworks Company in 1829. This was followed in 1903 the invention of chlorination of drinking water by Vincent Nesfield, a British officer in the Indian Medical Service. This has become the basis for our present day purification procedures.
